5. Etxegarate - Lizarrusti

Our ancestors walked this stage of the Cheese Route on countless occasions. This is what the burial mounds and megaliths found along the path tell us, despite their silence. At the beginning, just as we set off, we can see the great beech forest of Altzania, from which the only tributary of Gipuzkoa emerges, feeding into the Mediterranean. The burial mound of Igartza Oeste, the beautiful road of Bernoa, Zelatamuño... the landmarks of the path are youngsters beside the remains of those who lived in these lands thousands of years ago. We go through a ridge with Gipuzkoa on one side and Navarra on the other. Wherever we look, the views are stunning. And suddenly, almost without realising, going down and down along a narrow path we reach Lizarrusti.
